News broke last week out that Susan G. Komen for the Cure would no longer be giving grants to Planned Parenthood due to them being under federal and multiple state investigations, and their lack of preventive care. Komen decided this in December and opted to keep it quiet, because, you know, it’s not a big deal. Planned Parenthood blew the rooftop (and don’t say they didn’t) and the media went on a blitz attack. Planned Parenthood called for emergency donations, Komen’s website got hacked and their wikipedia page got scrambled with insults and lies. A Chinese man once said, “Know thine enemy,” and Komen had no idea who they were messing with. For those of you lovely people who donated your money to Planned Parenthood after they announced their emergency donation ”drive”, I’m gonna tell you something and you won’t like it:
YOU GOT PLAYED!
Do you know how much the grant is that Planned Parenthood receives from Komen? $680,000. Do you know what that is to Planned Parenthood? It’s a nickel in a bucket full of quarters. Planned Parenthood is a billion dollar a year industry. Losing that money is nothing to them. Getting your money was a bullying/intimidation tactic to simply say, “We’re taking you down.” They played the media like a board game, put the pieces in all the right places and attacked. “An assault on women’s health care” they called it, but was it really? Komen’s mission is this: to raise awareness and aid in the search of a cure for breast cancer. That’s what the money is designed used for. Not STD prevention, condoms, or general health care. How does Planned Parenthood play into breast cancer prevention? They don’t. They got caught in a lie last year saying they perform mammograms when they don’t. At most, they do the manual breast exams, which is standard in any physical, and every female over the age of 12 should know how to do it.
I am pro-life and I hate abortion, but I’m not talking about the movement or the unborn right now. I’m talking about an organization, a wolf in sheep’s clothing, who used women as pawns last week. An organization who feels they are entitled to any one’s money. This isn’t about cheap health care for women, this is about money. However little it may be. $680,000 less a year wouldn’t have broken them. And that wouldn’t have affected them until next year. Komen already said they would continue to fund existing grants. Two points I need to make:
- Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a privateorganization, therefore they are not obligated to give anyone grant money, and no private organization is entitled to receive grant money. Komen is not obligated to carry out Planned Parenthood’s “mission”, just their own. And if they feel an organization isn’t providing services that would further their mission then they have a right to take their money elsewhere.
- Planned Parenthood does not provide preventive care for Breast Cancer. They do not provide mammograms. At the most, manual breast exams which can be performed by any physician at any clinic and it doesn’t cost that much. It’s an exam that’s routine in most physicals and something women should do on their own, anyway. Plus, there are studies that link abortion to breast cancer (whether you want to believe it or not) and Planned Parenthood is the number one abortion provider in the country. So it’s kind of counter intuitive.
Everyone loves the pink ribbon, and Planned Parenthood is a bully. If Komen had the courage to stand up, then others would too and Planned Parenthood can’t have that. All they have going for them right now is public support and the public is stupid until the dominoes start falling. It’s sad that Komen folded under pressure, but they didn’t altogether reverse the decision. They allowed Planned Parenthood to apply next year for grants, but who says they will qualify? The criteria states that an organization can’t be under a criminal investigation, which they are. The federal government is looking into them for abusing taxpayer dollars and Kansas is a whole different ball field. If they can’t abide by the law, why should they get any one’s money? Why should we subject our women to a shady organization, do they not deserve better?
My question is this: Why does Planned Parenthood deserve Komen’s money?
