This is about the punishment for sin, which is death. Man, woman, and child are subject to the same punishment for whatever sin. From Genesis to Revelation, this has not changed. God is setting a standard for the Jewish people, which was almost impossible for them to follow and was never carried out correctly. God is holy and he wants his people close to him, but our sin gets in the way. A law had to be laid out and followed until Jesus came.
